Caritas Czech Republic is building a rainwater harvesting system at “Albinuța” kindergarten, in Moldova

At the beginning of September, Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova, in partnership with the Bilicenii Vechi City Hall, initiated the installation of a rainwater collection and utilisation system at the “Albinuța” kindergarten. The system, which involves capturing, filtering, and storing rainwater, will serve household needs, reducing the consumption of water from conventional sources and helping to cut institutional costs. This step is especially important in the context of many rural kindergartens facing a lack of running water, where alternative solutions are essential to ensure proper hygiene conditions for children. Moreover, the initiative provides a concrete example of how natural resources can be used efficiently and responsibly, with plans to replicate it in other institutions across Moldova.

Sustainable solutions for rural communities in Moldova

“For social institutions like our kindergarten, such a project means savings and a solution to frequent water shortages. Over 100 children attend the kindergarten, and every resource matters,” noted Mrs. Daraban, director of the “Albinuța” kindergarten.

Cristian Cainarian, president of Sîngerei district, added: “Our main objective is to use resources rationally and preserve them for future generations. This system is an important step in that direction. The local leader also emphasised that the initiative carries educational value, offering children and the community an example of responsibility towards the environment and natural resources.

A model with expansion potential for Moldova

The installation of the rainwater system marks a national first and serves as a best practice example for other rural communities. After completion, a technical guide will be developed presenting the implementation steps and achieved results for replication in other interested educational institutions. This practical tool will support local authorities and school directors eager to adopt similar solutions, fostering more responsible water use nationwide. The project is financially supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and is part of Caritas Czech Republic’s commitment to promoting sustainable and innovative solutions for rural Moldova. Looking ahead, this experience may pave the way for similar initiatives in other regions, reinforcing the idea that every community can become more resilient by effectively utilising its natural resources. The system is schedulted to be installed and ready to use by the end of this year.

Additional community support projects

Beyond water and sanitation, Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova implements a wide range of development and social initiatives across the country. These include establishing medico-social centres in multiple districts to improve healthcare and social services, supporting deinstitutionalisation efforts for adults with disabilities, and providing humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine. Through partnerships with local authorities and international donors, our team continues to promote inclusive, sustainable development and improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations in Moldova.
