Best of 2023 in Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova

In 2023, we have focused on strengthening and improving social services in Moldova by continuing to bring sustainable changes to the system. We introduced two new services for medico-social care centres: occupational therapy and intergenerational clubs. We organised activities to integrate Ukrainian refugees into local communities and promoted civic activism by building bridges between generations.

From lifeguard to an aspiring firefighter: The story of an ambitious young refugee from Ukraine

In the refugee placement centre in Calarasi, Moldova, we met Maxim Lesciuk, an 18-year-old from Odesa. A tennis champion and sports enthusiast, Maxim was due to enroll in firefighting school from the autumn of 2022. He was eager to serve and protect people in emergency situations. Maxim’s plans, and the dreams of many others, were shattered when the war came and disrupted everything.

Preparations for the biggest holidays of the year are in full swing. Decorated homes as well as public places, Christmas sweets, carols, carps and potato salad are essential part of Christmas celebrations in the Czech Republic. But what about in other parts of the world, in countries where Caritas Czech Republic works? Do they celebrate Christmas in Iraq, Mongolia, or Zambia? What does this part of the year mean to different cultures?

Years are just labels applied by people that divide us, says young student Tudorița from Moldova who joined our intergenerational initiative

19-year-old Tudorița Burduniuc is passionate about medicine and human connections. As a student at the Medical College in Bălți, Moldova, Tudorița goes beyond her medical books and stethoscope, dedicating time for the common good. Together with 80 fellow youths, Tudorița participated in an initiative by Caritas Czech Republic that engaged young individuals in the community and built bridges between generations. She shared with us her motivation for joining this initiative and the experience she gained from interacting with her peers.
