How wars destroy the environment and contribute to climate change

Did you know that militaries are responsible for 5.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions? Wars and conflicts not only have a devastating impact on people's lives, but also negatively affect the environment and contribute significantly to climate change. By the Ukraine war’s third year, total war-related emissions generated are roughly equal to the annual emissions of several mid-sized European countries combined. In Gaza, the destruction of ecosystems is being referred to as ecocide and a war crime. In the future, the reconstruction of post-war areas will also present a problem.

The number of people forced to leave their homes has more than doubled in the last decade. There are over 122 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, marking the highest single year increase recorded. The war in Ukraine has caused one of the largest and fastest population movements since the Second World War and has contributed significantly to this record number. Best of 2024 in Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova

In 2024, we strengthened Moldova’s social services through a series of impactful initiatives aimed at creating safer, more supportive communities. Our anti-bullying programme in schools across the country taught students empathy and respect through engaging workshops, while new sheltered homes in Glodeni and Soroca provided a safe space for independent living and mental health support. To ensure lasting impact, we also completed a key supervision training programme for caregivers.

I feel at home at the protected housing, says Elena from Moldova, who lives with a mental disorder

Elena, a 47-year-old woman living with a mental disorder, recently moved to the Viitorul protected house in Moldova. Here, she found a supportive environment where she can learn to live independently and feel included. The protected housing, opened by Caritas Czech Republic, offers personalised care, helping residents like Elena develop vital skills such as social interaction, communication, and household management.
